Carved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institute of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was put up to offer sustenance to the agricultural city in three sides explicitly education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing, and Home Science.

The university examinations are conducted through semester system every year in the months of December/January and May/ June respectively.
